Just been shopping for the tea for tomorrows cricket match. The Boro vs Nonington. This made me think about which cake is top of the league for cricket teas, the one that makes you ensure that you are at the front of the queue. My suggestions are the following:
- Battenburg Cake
- Millionaires Shortbread
- Scones with Jam and Cream
- Verity’s Cookies
- Homemade Victoria Sponge
I would appreciate some feedback on this important subject via the comments facility.
It has to be Battenburg for me although Verity’s cookies come in at a close second.
I like Battenburg Cake, it is nice.
Not sure haven’t tried the cookies, but I would have the sponge much higher up the list.
Are there more suggestions, as I am sure that I have missed some.
You’ve forgotten carrot cake a much underestimated gem and also the good old home made sponge with fresh cream and strawberries. A Gill White special I believe!
Ange makes a good carrot cake, however, I do believe we have had one of Gill’s Sponges with cream and strawbs this year and it is a winner!
Eewee’s mums lemon cake is also a strong contendser as is Mrs Harding’s fruit cake, both excellent entries from ‘the brook’
For once, i have to agree with Niel. Sponge is much higher up the list
Although its a manufactured cake, I had my first fondant fancy for a fews years (part of an great tea at Finedon). Excellent cake although a bit effeminate.
tht millionaires shortbread was th bomb lol
bt mums passion cake is bettr thn al tht cake by a long way
Sorry when you say manufactured are you talking about cakes or Finedon’s ability to manufacture results i.e crossing the boundaries of sportsmanship?
I’ve now found that anything from there leaves a nasty taste in the mouth.
Aren’t we forgetting the good old Tea cake, liberally spread with (real) butter, washed down with a strong mug of tea..Heaven. You can keep your Sponges and french fancies.
I find it very interesting that the subject of cakes has generated more comments that all the other posts put together.
I think the humble Tea Cake although fantastic in it’s own right doesn’t fall in to this catagory, Although i will say that it should be an ever present at a good Cricket tea ( the more butter the better).
I know I am slightly biased but credit where credit is due, I think that the teas on Saturday were possibly the finest this year sandwhiches through to cakes not a weak link.
Get that strawberry sponge in the top 5 now!!!!
Congratualations must go to Gill White for the homemade cakes served for tea during the Desborough game. Excellent Fresh Cream Sponge
